Workshops & Trainings
Beyond the General Assemblies and annual conferences, the NYA has been involved in organizing workshops for young scientists with the aim of mentoring younger scientists. Several of these events have been organized in collaboration with NAS, other African Academies (senior and young), research institutes, and universities that have served as host institutions for these events.
- The NYA has her core values entrenched in integrity and excellence in research, and fostering research collaborations among young researchers nationally and internationally.
Past workshops
- The first of these workshops was held in October, 2011 at the Covenant University, Ota, with the theme ‘Essentials of Quality Research Output’
- The National Workshop for Chemical Scientists with the theme “Recent Advances in Chemistry” was held between 24th and 26th March, 2013 at the National Secretariat of the Nigerian Academy of Science within the University of Lagos.
- A workshop for Young Statisticians on “Recent Advances in Smoothing and Regression for Longitudinal, Spatial and Event History Data” was held at the University of Ilorin on 7th and 8th July, 2014 in conjunction with the University’s Department of Statistics. - A Research for Development workshop was organized by the NYA and hosted by the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja in 2015.
- Capacity Building Workshop for Young (Early-Career) Women Academics in Nigeria organised by the Nigerian Young Academy (NYA) in conjunction with the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) with the support of the United States Consulate General Lagos and hosted by the College of Medicine University of Lagos (CMUL) and the BRAINS initiative on 15th and 16th June, 2016.
- The first anti-plagiarism workshop organised by the NYA was hosted by Covenant University, Ota on the 5th of February, 2018.
- As part of an IAP-Carnegie supported project, a Capacity Building Workshop for Young (Early-Career) Women Academics in West Africa was organized in conjunction with six other West African Academies (including NAS) and the event took place on 7th and 8th March, 2018 at the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) Guest House Annex, Harvey Road, Yaba, Lagos.
- A workshop on Distributional Regression Models for Analysis of Spatial Data was organised in conjunction with the Department of Statistics, Federal University of Technology, Akure from the 19th to 21st June, 2018.
- An Anti-Plagiarism workshop organised by the NYA was hosted by the African University for Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja on the 10th of December, 2018.
- The Academy was part of the joint organisers of the 4th TWAS Young Affiliate Network (TYAN) International Thematic Workshop and 1st African Symposium hosted by the Sub-Saharan African Region of TYAN that took place from 10th to 14th June, 2019 at the Heritage Continental Resort Hotel, Ijapo Estate, Akure.
- Another anti-plagiarism workshop was held at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on Monday 26th August, 2019.
- The Biological and Health Science Working Group of the Nigerian Young Academy in partnership with the Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria held a one-day workshop for academics on Technical Paper Writing and Anti-plagiarism on 9th February 2022.
- NYA joined the Nigerian Academy of Science to co-host a webinar and afterwards a policy roundtable on Combatting the Scourge of Predatory Academic Practices in Nigeria which held in March 2022, on the 9th and 29th respectively.
