Stephen Adeniyi Adefegha
Biographical Info
Biographical Info:
Dr, Stephen Adeniyi Adefegha is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria. He obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Biochemistry from the University of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria in 2004 and a Masters (M.Sc.) degree in Biochemistry (Xenobiochemistry) from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State in 2008. He won a sandwich training educational programme (STEP) by the Abdus Salaam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (STEP-ICTP) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for three successive years (2010 - 2012) at the University of Trieste, Trieste, Italy. He was awarded an education trust fund (ETF) scholarship by the Federal Government of Nigeria on pre–doctoral fellowship at the Technical University of Dresden, Dresden, Germany (2012- 2013). In 2014, He bagged a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Biochemistry from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. He had a postdoctoral training at the Department of Biochemical Toxicology, Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, Brazil (2015 – 2016) and a visiting scholar to the same institution from 2019 to 2020. He was awarded the Georg Forster Research Fellowship for Experienced Scientists tenable at the University of Hannover, Germany (2022). His research interests focus on the critical role of food and food bioactive compounds in disease prevention and health promotion. This focus is immensely contributing towards the core values and innovations in the areas of functional foods, nutraceuticals, phytomedicine and molecular nutrition. His research has demonstrated that some bioactive food components (phenolic acids, flavonoids, alkaloids, essential oils) attenuate free-radical mediated degenerative diseases (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, neurodegeneration, erectile dysfunction and rheumatoid arthritis); thus preventing diseases and promoting good health. He has developed medicinal confectioneries (biscuits and bread) from plantain-wheat, pigeon-wheat and bambara groundnut-wheat blends with good sensory qualities, nutritional properties, antioxidant activities and antidiabetic effects. Dr Adefegha has supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has published over a hundred and fifty (150) articles in referred journals, has two patents to his credit and contributed as reviewer in several scientific journals.
