Biographical Info:
Ahmed Kolade Oloyo, Ph.D.
Professor Ahmed Kolade Oloyo is a distinguished Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, with over 20 years of academic and research experience. His work bridges fundamental biomedical science and translational research, with a primary focus on salt-sensitive hypertension, vascular physiology, and the molecular underpinnings of cardiovascular risk in African populations.
He earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Physiology from the University of Ibadan and a Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Lagos. He has also received advanced international training in medical statistics, genomics, and global health from Stanford University and Stellenbosch University. Professor Oloyo’s postdoctoral research has spanned several globally renowned institutions, including Texas Southern University (USA), Charité University (Germany), and the University of Pretoria (South Africa), enriching his scientific perspectives and expanding his collaborative networks.
His research is dedicated to addressing the global burden of hypertension and its complications, particularly among individuals of Black African ancestry, who are disproportionately affected by salt sensitivity. As Principal Investigator, he leads multiple funded projects including a prestigious NIH Emerging Global Leader (K43) Award focused on oxygen-sensing mechanisms in the fetal origins of salt-sensitive hypertension. He also leads a TETFund/NRF-funded study investigating predictors of salt sensitivity among young normotensive Nigerians, with the long-term goal of enabling early risk detection and preventive strategies.
A committed educator and mentor, Professor Oloyo has taught cardiovascular, neurophysiology, and renal physiology for nearly two decades at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has supervised over 16 MSc and 4 Ph.D. students. He currently serves as the Head of the Department of Physiology and chairs the College of Medicine’s Animal Care and Use Ethics Committee. His leadership experience also includes roles in postgraduate coordination, student affairs, and academic quality assurance.
Professor Oloyo has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to international book chapters. He is widely recognized for his academic excellence, having received multiple best lecturer awards and the 2022 BRAINS Award for outstanding mentorship and grantsmanship. He regularly presents at major international scientific meetings including the American Physiological Society, Europhysiology, and the African Association of Physiological Sciences.
He is a Fellow of the U.S. Fogarty/CBR Bioethics Program and an active member of several professional societies, including the American Physiological Society, The Physiological Society (UK), the International Society for Hypertension, and the Nigerian Young Academy.
Professor Oloyo continues to drive impactful, collaborative research that informs policy and practice in cardiovascular health, and he remains deeply committed to capacity building and research excellence in Africa.
